Opened December 21, 1983 at the Broadhurst Theatre, (New York) and ran for 669 performances.

Synopsis

It's a wonderful cornucopia of music, drama, comedy and above all, tap-dancing. The story concerns a 10-year-old Black kid named Willie who doesn't want to be a lawyer like his well-to-do, stern father, He just has to "dance", like his Uncle Dipsey, an aspiring Broadway choreographer who is very much Willie's mentor. And, dance he does!

Winner of 2 Tony Awards

This  was the first Broaway show to present blacks in a positive light. This show also launched the careers of Alfonso Ribeiro and Savion Glover.

TAP DANCE KID producer, Evelyn Barron brought the property to the Great White Way, following her success with the 70's tele-film also entitled, TAP DANCE KID. Tony Winner Savion Glover replaced Alfonso Rebiero on Broadway in the title role.
