Prettybelle

Book & Lyrics by Bob Merrill
Music by Jule Styne
Based on the book by Jean Arnold
Opened February 1, 1971 at the Shubert Theatre (Boston).

Synopsis

Prettybelle Sweet, a manic depressive alcoholic schizophrenic who'd put herself in a Southern asylum. That's because once she'd discovered that her late husband Leroy, the sheriff of a small Louisiana county, had terrorized blacks and mexicans, she decided to make up for it by donating money to their causes and by bedding members of these ethnic groups. When word got out, the bigoted whites destroyed her property; she then accused her husband's deputy of raping her, which led to her committing herself for her own safety.
