Synopsis

In 1853, Japan was just Nippon, a simple farmer's island, rooted in tradition and "floating in the middle of the sea." Then the West arrived, seeking trade routes, and bringing with them the conveniences -- and evils -- of industrialized society. Within 135 years, Nippon had rapidly mutated into Japan, dominator of world economics. The Westernization of Japan is painfully related through a pair of doomed friends caught on either side of the struggle between serenity and "civilization."

Mastering the highly theatrical Kabuki-style storytelling, Sondheim and Weidman's first collaboration remains one of the composer's most legendary and haunting works, incorporating music he himself considers among his very best.
