Richard Rodgers opened the production in Detroit, but brought it to the Shubert for a break-in engagement before presenting it in New York. Richard Kiley and Diahann Carroll were the stars. Joe Layton staged the production and created the dances.

This was Richard Rodgers first production after the death of his partner, Oscar Hammerstein II and the only show that he created his own lyrics for.
