Synopsis
The small town of Puddleby, England finds itself in the middle of the most sensational trial of the century as noted eccentric, Doctor John Dolittle, stands accused of murder! Insisting that he can actually talk to the animals, the doctor defends himself against charges that he threw an unknown woman off a cliff to her death. With only his faithful parrot, Polynesia (the finest animal linguist in the world), a devoted friend, Matthew Mugg, an innocent boy, Tommy, and a menagerie of animals to support his story, the good doctor tries to convince the court, led by his arch-enemy General Bellowes, that he did not murder anyone. He argues that he simply helped a seal, named Sophie, escape from the circus so that she could return to her devoted husband at the North Pole. As Doctor Dolittle tells his story to the court, we encounter a myriad of colorful characters including Emma Fairfax, General Bellowes' outspoken niece, Albert Blossom, the proprietor of a local circus and a host of hilarious animals who have turned to Dolittle for some form of assistance. Eventually cleared of murder charges, the court nonetheless finds the doctor to be criminally insane and locks him in the local jail. With a little help from Polynesia and a handful of friends, both human and animal, Dolittle escapes and sets sail on an adventure to find the elusive Great Pink Sea Snail, the oldest and wisest of the creatures on earth. Dolittle, Emma (a surprise stowaway), Matthew, Tommy, and Polynesia take up duties on the ship. A storm ensues sinking their tiny vessel and washing the passengers ashore to Sea Star Island, ironically the home of the Pink Sea Snail. With his mission complete, Dolittle still cannot return to England because he is a wanted man. The others agree to return to England to try and clear his name. Emma and Polynesia organize all the animals of England to go on strike against their owners. This brings the country's productivity to a grinding halt. As Bellowes and his cronies try to figure out how to deal with the situation, Emma and animals surprise them, stating their case in front of the town, demanding Dolittle be able to return safely. Having no choice but to agree, Bellowes clears Dolittle of the insanity charge. Just then, high in the sky, John Dolittle arrives on the back of a Giant Lunar Moth as Emma runs into his arms and the town embraces him as a hero.
