Misc. Show Information
Carmen is Bizet's masterpiece. Composed in 1873-74, with a superb libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, the opera was received coldly when it premiered the following year at the Opéra-Comique; audiences of the day were shocked by the raw passions given such vivid expression in Bizet's brilliant score. But Carmen has since become one of the most popular works in the repertory. Unfortunately, Bizet did not live enjoy the opera's enormous success; he died of a heart attack three months after its premiere, on June 3, 1875. He was only 36 years old at the time of his death.
