Synopsis
In early English literature, few works are more revered than Chaucer's lyrical, bawdy Canterbury Tales. His light-hearted treatise on human nature and the war between sexes has illuminated scholars for hundreds of years. Now comes an illuminating stage version of the tales, which are framed around a group of English commoners' annual journey to the shrine of St. Thomas a Becket. Telling tales to wile away the trip, the pilgrims fill the stage with a beguiling range of boisterous comedy, lilting romance and fetching images. Four of Chaucer's tales (The Miller's Tale, the Steward's Tale, the Merchant's Tale and the haunting Wife of Bath's Tale) are retold here by the ensemble as the group reaches both its destination and a collective wisdom about the battle between the sexes.
