The villainous Captain Levison tempts Lady Isabel into leaving Archibald, her husband, and their children. Years later, deserted by Levison, she returns to her family home, East Lynne, disguised as a governess. Archibald, now divorced and believing Lady Isabel to be dead, has remarried. In the final dramatic scenes, Levison is found guilty of an unsolved murder and the dying Lady Isabel is forgiven.
