On the waterfront of colorful New York at the turn of the century, an old whiskey-drinking Swedish sailor, Chris, is excited that his daughter Anna, is coming to see him after fifteen years of living in St. Paul. Though Chris dotes on his "little Anna," the truth is Anna has "been around" and has come to put the pieces of her life back together. Chris' boozy friend Marthy privately sizes Anna up -- correctly -- as a former streetwalker. Just as Anna falls in love with a simple sailor, Marthy, drunk and jealous, spills the truth of Anna's past at a neighborhood ball. Her sailor leaves on the next ship out of New York and Anna's hopes of leading a normal life are dashed. But a full year later, with everyone older and wiser, happiness is restored
