Music By Jacques Offenbach
Lyrics By Jacques Offenbach
Type of Musical: Operetta
Opened: October 21, 1858
Theatre: Bouffes-Parisiens, Paris
Synopsis
Orpheus can't stand his wife, Eurydice, and is delighted when she is bitten by a poisonous snake and carried off to the underworld by Pluto. Public Opinion, in the guise of a mezzo soprano, demands that Orpheus follow her to Hades and bring her back. While he is there, we get to witness some rather "ungodly" behavior by the denizens of Mount Olympus.
