What do you get when you combine the pageantry of musical theater with the songs of ABBA? Rave reviews, and a huge box office! Currently playing in London’s West End, Toronto, and San Francisco, Mamma Mia! has broken all local box office records.
The story centers on a young woman, Sophie, who was raised by her single mother. Sophie is about to get married and wants her father to walk her down the aisle. However she’s not sure which of her mother’s old flames is her father. So she invites the three possible candidates to her wedding, unbeknownst to her mother of course!
The catch, rather the kitsch, is that all of the songs used in this musical were originally performed by ABBA. More than 20 singles, including the hits “Dancing Queen”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “S.O.S.”, “Chiquitita”, and the title track “Mamma Mia!” are featured in this musical. And the music of Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus has never sounded so good! Somehow the lyrics fit seamlessly into the story.
Mamma Mia! will tour San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, and Boston before heading to Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre (former home of Cats) in the fall of 2001.
Some Reviews Received!
For anyone who is a ABBA fan, I got good news and bad news. The good news is that music, by ABBA, is Broadway bound for this fall in a musical called "Mamma Mia". The bad news is that ABBA won't be there to perform their music.
Now, don't get me wrong - the musical, in itself may be very good with it's storyline and it very well may be a hit, it's been running in London for 3 years or so. But I don't get that storyline in this new cast album. All the ABBA favorites are here "Dancing Queen", "Take A Chance On Me" etc... oddly enough "Fernando" was omitted; the arrangements are authentic and the performances are pretty close to sounding like ABBA. That may work on stage (remember "Beatlemania"), but why bother with this album when you can get the "Greatest Hits" cd of ABBA with their actual singing. ~ Gary Piacentini
Tickets for MAMMA MIA! are available now, performances begin October 5,2001. Don't miss out! Set on a mythical (yet contemporary) Greek island, the musical hits of Swedish rock group ABBA are interwoven into the story of a young woman who is about to be married and her relationship with her mother, who must confront her past. Music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. This musical show was a smash hit in London and is bound to "Rock" New York!
