A Musical Entertainment With Music By Andrew Lloyd Webber, And Book & Lyrics by Alan Ayckbourn CD Available October 16, 2001 16-Week Limited Engagement Opens On Broadway October 28, 2001
(New York, NY, October 4, 2001) -- Goodspeed Musicals (Michael P. Price, Executive Director) will present
BY JEEVES, a musical entertainment based on the Jeeves stories by P.G. Wodehouse, with book and lyrics by Alan Ayckbourn and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show opens Sunday, October 28, 2001 at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre and plays through Sunday, February 3, 2002. Decca Broadway releases the American premier recording on October 16, 2001.
Directed by Alan Ayckbourn, BY JEEVES takes place in a church hall where Bertie Wooster is scheduled to give a banjo recital. His faithful manservant Jeeves, a lover of music, steals the banjo, forcing Bertie to improvise with a dizzying tale full of romantic entanglements and mistaken identities involving his friends and their love interests. Starring John Scherer as Bertie Wooster and Martin Jarvis as Jeeves, BY JEEVES also features Donna Lynne Champlin (Honoria Glossop), James Kall (Gussie Fink-Nottle), Ian Knauer (Harold "Stinker" Pinker), Emily Loesser (Stiffy Byng), Don Stephenson (Bingo Little), Sam Tsoutsouvas (Sir Watkyn Bassett), Becky Watson (Madeline Bassett) and Steve Wilson (Cyrus Budge III (Junior). Tom Ford, Molly Renfroe and Court Whisman round out the ensemble.
Prior to Broadway, BY JEEVES played the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, England (May 1996), London's Duke of York Theatre (July 1996) and London's Lyric Theatre (October 1996). The American premiere of BY JEEVES was produced by Goodspeed Musicals at The Norma Terris Theatre (October 1996). That production subsequently played engagements at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles (March 1997), the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (June 1997) and the Pittsburgh Public Theatre (February 2001).
By Jeeves is just one of the many acclaimed - and wildly loved -- musicals from
