Zenda 4 out of 5 stars

Solid Vernon Duke score, great performances by Alfred Drake, Chita Rivera, Carmen Matthews (who stopped the show once), and great choroegraphy by Jack Cole. Played in SF, LA and Pasadena, should have gone on to NYC with some book revisions -- opening song/scene was awkward. Drake gave a wonderful performance, totally commanding the stage. He and Chita stopped the show cold with "Love is the Worst Possible Thing" in Act 2. Encores or Mufti or 42nd Street Moon should revive the show in concert since the score sings well, especially Yesterday's Forgotten, For the Love of Zenda, Let Her Not Be Beautiful, Love is the worst Possible Thing and Alive at Last. Vernon Duke's best score since Cabin in the Sky.
